APPLETON, Wis (WFRV) - Thousands of Irish or would be Irish hit the bars this weekend to celebrate St. Patrick's Day weekend. In Northeast Wisconsin, law enforcement is stepping up patrol. The Appleton Police Department is adding 23 additional officers on the roads and walking College Avenue Saturday and Sunday.

Police expect hundreds of people to eat and drink at bars and restaurants around town. Some may even drink a little too much. So police will be on the lookout for traffic violations, OWI's and underage drinkers.

The police department is able to pay for some of the overtime through a grant by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The money was made available to reduce the number of deaths on the roads.
