Santorum's decision to suspend his campaign removes the last remaining obstacle for GOP front runner Mitt Romney to become the party's nominee.
The decision to suspend the campaign comes just hours after Santorum's youngest daughter, Bella, was released from the hospital. The three-year-old who suffers from the genetic disorder Trisomy 18 had been hospitalized Friday after falling ill.
Santorum's momentum had begun to slow and aides had acknowledged that the April 24 primary in Pennsylvania, his home state, was was a must-win. But his once double-digit lead slipped to single digits.
Deciding to suspend instead of end his campaign provides Santorum with the ability to continue fundraising to pay off campaign debt.
