"We may have some students that will not have the funding that they expected to have, especially in the summer starting so quickly," said Elaina Koltz, Financial Aid Advisor with U-W Green Bay's Veteran's Services
Tuition assistance for current terms won't be affected. But the longer it takes Congress and the President to find a budget solution, the more likely tuition assistance will be cut. That could have a big impact on part-time military personnel.
"You're a reservist but you're on active duty orders and you're doing different types of missions. And Reserve soldiers, as well. So, those two will be impacted mostly by the suspension of tuition assistance," said Jeremy Galica, NWTC Veterans Advisor
If such cuts happen, student veterans may have to reduce their credit loads. But veterans services officials say reservists may have other financial aids available.
"Most of them (active duty reservists) do have chapter benefits. So they do have those as well as tuition assistance," said Koltz.
"Chapter 1606. It's a reserve educational benefit. Chapter 1607 is a similar program that works for those who've been activated or are on active duty orders and the Montgomery G.I. bill, post 911," said Galica.
Other options include Pell grants, which are available to all students.
