Web Exclusive: New Leaf Market in talks for downtown site

GREEN BAY, Wis (WFRV) Some people call downtown Green Bay a food desert, but that may be changing.

 

"It's going to be a full service grocery store owned by the community," says New Leaf Market president Lynn Walter.

 

New Leaf Market would sell local, healthy and organic food. It's designed as a co-op where people can pay a fee to become a member.

 

"Special discounts for members, events discounts, in the years when we make a profit, profits are redistributed to member owners," says Walter.

 

"I think that's a perfect fit for the people that are around this area especially," says downtown resident Quinn O'Reilly.

 

O'Reilly has lived downtown for two years. She says she is excited about the store.

 

"I like to eat organic, so I have to go all the way to the other side of town to get that, and sometimes all the way to Fond du Lac," says O'Reilly.

 

But, after years of planning, only about 650 people have signed up. Walter says they want 1,500 by the time the store opens.

 

"A lot of people have told us that as soon as we have a location, as soon as we have a sign that says future home of, they are planning to join. So, we expect a big bump when we've secured our site," says Walter.
