Notre Dame Tritons win D-2 girls state basketball crown

GREEN BAY (WIAA) - Notre Dame (23-6) won its second State championship with a 42-33 win over New Berlin Eisenhower (25-3) in the Division 2 title tilt Saturday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

A pair of three-pointers ignited the Triton offense to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams found points hard to come by in the second quarter. The Tritons put just five points on the board, allowing the Lions to reduce their deficit to 19-17 at the half.

 The Lions came out roaring in the second half with the first seven points to take a 24-19 lead, but Notre Dame responded with a 9-2 run in the final 5:22 seconds of the period to take a 28-26 lead into the final quarter.

The Tritons broke a 28-28 tie with a bucket and free throw by Brianna Bryne with 5:55 remaining in the game, it was a lead they would not relinquish. They made 7-of-10 free throws and two high percentage shots in the final five minutes to build their biggest lead of the game at 11 points with 11 seconds to play.

Notre Dame was led by Anika Johnson with 11 points and eight rebounds, and Byrne added 10 points. The Lions were led by Jenny Weiland with 12 points.
