WAUPACA (WFRV) Some two-hundred people gathered at the Waupaca County Law Enforcement Center. Many of them police officers, fire fighters or emergency medical technicians. They came to a place that was like a second home for fallen Iola Police Officer Jerry Mork, son of a former sheriff.

"Jerry's dream was to become a police officer and I know that's the first thing that I ever learned about him in the halls of Iola-Scandinavia High School," said Patty Mork, the officer's widow.

Mork also served as a volunteer fire fighter...unitl July 13, 1985. After Mork failed to reply to several radio checks, officers found him shot to death in this cemetery. The first Waupaca County officer to die in the line of duty. Today, after much planning, a statue dedicated to Mork, and all who work in emergency services was dedicated with a simple hope.

"Let this statue today remind us of one who served with courage and compassion. And may we never have to gather together for a day like this ever again." said Pastor Dale Eggert of United Methodist Church.

"We need to make sure our guys are aware that this is what can happen. You've got to be safe. You've got to do the right things," said Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel.

Patty Mork calls the statue a perfect honor, and not just for her husband."

"It'll remind us of those officers that we loved that are no longer with us. Those that continue to answer the call and those that made it safely to the end of their career," she said.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
