KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) Throughout the state, thousands of hunters showed up Monday night to weigh in on a sandhill crane hunt.  The Wisconsin DNR is trying to determine if there's interest in hunting the bird.  It's part of their annual Conservation Congress ballot.

Officials say there are already concerns from farmers because the cranes have been impacting crops.  The sandhill's population is also on the rise.

We asked hunters what they think of the issue.  "Yeah.  I think we should take some steps to put a season in," said hunter Dan Ninneman.

Hunter Don Ebelt says he wouldn't shoot sandhills, but voted for the measure anyway.  He says, "If the hunter wants to do it, he should have the right to do it."

Votes took place in all counties throughout Wisconsin.  We're expecting to see a final tally Tuesday afternoon.  Even if approved by hunters, the decision will likely be left up to Wisconsin voters as a referendum on the general ballot.
