(CNN) A moment of silence was held aboard a cruise ship in the North Atlantic early on Sunday (April 15) to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The ceremony took place aboard the "Azamara Journey", one of two boats that converged on the site where where the Titanic went down in 1912 after striking an iceberg.

The captain announced over the loudspeaker the start of a two minute silence. The names of those who died a century ago were then read aloud and projected on a screen in the front of the room.

Later, a memorial service was held.

"We pray for the departed, especially those who died on this night 100 years ago. We asked that freed from every shadow of death, they may take their place in the new creation where all tears are wiped away. Lord, in your mercy, we pray for the relatives of all those who died on Titanic," said Reverend Robert Lawrence at the memorial.

The Titanic was considered unsinkable but foundered in frigid Atlantic waters off Newfoundland on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg.

Around 700 people were rescued but there were too few lifeboats to save the rest.

Two cruise ships, the Azamara Journey, which arrived from North America, and the Balmoral from England, converged on the Titanic site late on Saturday (April 14) to mark the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.
