Monday the Medical College of Wisconsin announced Green Bay is one of the first sites for a new satellite campus.
The college's Board of Trustees has authorized the college to enter in to the development phase with the Green Bay and Mosinee areas to create community-based medical education programs.
The move means that for the first time in state history students will be able to study medicine outside of Milwaukee or Madison.
The goal is to have new campuses up and running by 2015. The Medical College of Wisconsin notes that certain milestones must be met in order to achieve this goal. Those milestones include objectives relevant to accrediation, funding, faculty recruitment and development, and the creation of local residency programs.
The community-based medical education program is an initiative to address the shortage of physicians and other health care providers in Wisconsin, especially in underserved rural and urban areas.
Local 5's Terry Kovarik and Caroline Rowland are working on this story and will have the latest information tonight at 5:00 & 6:00.
