(WFRV) -- Local 5's Hometown Hero segment has been tracking the recovery of Justin Lane, a Green Bay soldier who lost both of his legs in an explosion while serving in Afghanistan.

Now, through the art of music, Lane's therapy appears to be hitting a high note on the web and in our nation's capitol.

Lane has come a long way in the last year and a half since emerging from a coma after an improvised explosive device claimed both of his legs.  He credits intensive physical and musical therapy, and faith in God with bringing him through.

"I still struggle with internal issues, but it's really not a big deal when I know he's (God) got my back," Lane said.

Lane was determined to make his mark on the song "Only a Mountain", by Jason Castro.

"Probably within that week.  I had bought all the stuff that I needed.  A guitar, all the recording equipment and just went at it and started practicing," Lane said.

With help from a local studio, Lane recorded a video in which he sings the song and performs all the instruments.  Lane's father said in a short time it became a YouTube hit.

"Within the first couple of days it was up to a thousand views," Art Lane told us.  "And then within I think three weeks, it was over 20,000 views."

The YouTube video led to an invitation to sing at the "Black Tie and Boots" Presidential Inaugural Ball.  It's an event that promises to put Lane on a new track.

"Susan Gibson, one of the songwriters who was with me there on stage, invited me to go to a couple of song writing events in Texas," Lane said.

Lane says other injured service members tell him they've been inspired by his video to move forward.
