OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) A record number of people are signing up to take storm spotting classes. Officials with the National Weather Service say last year's tornadoes are one reason for the increase.
Last year, on April 10th, ten tornadoes touched down throughout the state. Kaukauna was one of the hardest hit areas. Spotters are used to gather information in their communities that radar can't detect: things like wind speed, rainfall and snow depths.
"It helps to put out an effective and accurate warning," says National Weather Service Meteorologist Jeff Last.
Winnebago County Emergency Management Director Linda Kollmann adds, "Sometimes the eye on the ground is the best source of information."
