GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (WFRV) High winds and low humidity are prompting action in Outagamie County to help prevent wild fires. Because conditions have been so dry, spring wild fires are at their peak.
Outagamie County Emergency Management has issued a "no burning advisory." You're encouraged to avoid campfires and setting fire to debris. Fire fighters say most of these blazes can be avoided.
"They are if you are using a back yard fire pit. Make sure you have something to extinguish it if it gets out of control," says Grand Chute Fire Department Fire Prevention Specialist Jesse Pickett.
Discarded cigarette butts are often to blame, especially in areas of tall grass. Controlled burns are also becoming frequent this time of year. These burns help eliminate the possibility of wild fires by freeing up dead vegetation.
