GREEN BAY (WFRV) Volunteers collected over 18-thousand signatures last year to force an unsuccessful recall election against Democratic State Senator Dave Hansen. But now state elections officials are investigating allegations of petition signature fraud against one of the recall groups. That was a surprise to Hansen's opponent, who led a separate petition drive.

"For the Government Accountability Board to be investigating something like this after the fact, makes no sense to me," said GOP activist Dave Vanderleest.

The Government Accountability Board subpoenaed former Green Bay alderman Chad Fradette. He led the Committee to Recall Dave Hansen after splitting with Vanderleest's group. The G-A-B ordered him to surrender documents, e-mails, business cards, volunteer names and phone number and even news articles about the recall. While Senator Hansen declined comment, the State Senate Democratic Committee wants acceptability, if the allegations are true.

"If these signatures were fraudulent, we should have the groups or the Republican Party, that sponsored these groups to come in here, to pay for the entire recall and also pay for this entire investigation," said SSDC spokesman Brad Wojciechowsk.

Dave Vanderleest says he also wants some accountability.

"I'm going to be filing some open records requests, some freedom of information requests to see who the complaining party is and to see if there's been any abuse of process," he said.

Local 5 News left phone messages for Fradette and tried contacting him at his work place. He was unavailable comment on this story.

GAB spokesman Reid Magney also declined comment because the matter is an on-going investigation.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
