Fond du Lac, Wis.(WFRV)-- Friday shortly after 4pm, the Fond du Lac Fire Department responded to a report of an ammonia leak at Milk Specialties at 325 Tomkins St. Upon arrival firefighters met with employees of the business  who were in the process of evacuating. Fire crews detected an odor of ammonia  outside. All employees were able to exit safely and did not need medical attention.

Several nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution and were allowed back in their homes after the leak was mitigated. Many area residents called 911 to report smelling the odor.

Fond du Lac Hazardous Materials Team members assembled and began testing air quality both outside and inside the plant.

Emergency repairs were made a machine inside the plant which caused the ammonia tank to over pressurize resulting in an automatic  pressure relief valve to activate.

The FDLFD was assisted by the FDLPD and the FDL Department of Public Works.
