Buyer Beware: Craigslist Home Rental Scam

By: Ross McAbee
Updated: August 18, 2012

Green Bay, WI (WFRV)- The Green Bay Police Department is investigating a report of a Craigslist scam involving fraudulent home rentals.

In this scam, a Craigslist ad uses the real name and address of an actual homeowner who has a house for sale, as well as the real open house dates and times and a photograph of the house.

The ad on Craigslist claims that the house is for rent (not for sale) and that a security deposit of $700.00 is required to hold the house for rent. The ad includes a phone number that is obviously from outside of the United States.

Police warning renters to be cautious with any home rental ads that require funds to be sent via wire or money order on local homes with foreign contact information.
