De Pere, Wis. (WFRV) -- The first multi-lane roundabout in Northeast Wisconsin is going through some changes.
Monday night, work began to make the Claude Allouez Bridge roundabout in De Pere easier to understand for drivers.
The Wisconsin DOT is making a number of changes to the five year old roundabout to ease traffic flow and reduce the number of fender benders.
The changes include making the right lanes "right turn only" when you come off the bridge on Main Avenue heading eastbound and turn south onto Broadway, and when driving southbound on Broadway, turning right or westbound onto Main Avenue.
Additionally, drivers heading northbound on Broadway looking to turn left on westbound onto the Claude Allouez Bridge will soon find they can make that left turn now from both northbound lanes.
This week, all these changes will be clearly laid out for drivers with new pavement markings and overhead signs.
"It's absolutely critical to pay attention to the overhead signs and pavement marking," said Randy Ashman of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. If drivers keep turning from the improper lanes, we'll continue to have congestion and crashes and obviously that's not our goal."
The work taking place this week should make the roundabout less congested during all periods of the day.
