SHEBOYGAN, Wisc. (WFRV) The waters of Lake Michigan turned deadly over the holiday weekend.

At about 3pm Sunday, the Sheboygan Police were called out to North Beach for a male who had been in the water and was in distress.

When officers and first responders arrived, they found bystanders performing CPR on a 61-year-old man from Freedom, WI.

The man had gone into the water to assist his 9-year-old grandson who had been swimming but had gone too far from shore.

The 9-year-old was helped to shore by other beach-goers.

The grandfather did not make it back to shore. He was found unresponsive in the water and was returned to shore. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Around the same time yesterday, the US Coast Guard was notified of a 14-year-old boy who was reportedly swept away by the current while swimming with friends in Lake Michigan, north of the Port Washington Harbor.

A rescue boat from the US Coast Guard in Sheboygan and a rescue helicopter from the US Coast Guard in Traverse City, Michigan, were launched to assist in the search. Boat crews from the Ozaukee Sheriff's Office and Fire Department along with the Ozaukee dive team also searched for the boy.

As of 4am today, the US Coast Guard is continuing their search. Local marine units and divers will join the search at 8am.

"The Coast Guard will continue to search as long as there is a possibility of survival," said Petty Officer 1st Class Nathanial Parks, a search -and-rescue coordinator with Sector Lake Michigan.
