Oneida Nation honors veterans

Oneida, Wis. (WFRV) - Native Americans in Oneida also honored veterans today.

It was during the Oneida Nation pow wow at Oneida Turtle School.

Organizers say it's their way of bringing veterans together to thank them for their service.

 
They say today's pow wow also brings the community together and helps them maintain their culture.

"It lets people know that we're still here, that we're still teaching our young people about the past way that we've done things, about some of the things that we do in a social setting," emcee Francis Huntington says.

During the ceremony, the veterans received eagle feathers in recognition of their service to our country.

The feathers are one of the highest honors a native american veteran can receive.

Recipients say it's a great honor.

"It represents respect that your colleagues have for you and the good deeds that you have done,  and encouragement to other people that to try and help the community, be a good citizen," veteran Jerry Hill says.

Today's pow-wow was one of several held across the nation.
