Veterans job fairs offer assistance in Fond du Lac

Fond du Lac, Wis.(WFRV)--

Veterans do so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy.

Unfortunately--many can't find a job when they return home.

That's why there was a special career fair held for veterans today at Moraine Park Technical College.

Local Five's Donald Robinson reported on today's career fair from Fond du Lac.

Finding a job these days is not easy for many people, and breaking into a career can be even harder.

Veteran Ben Mutterer, "I like to be working on cars and to be in management. One day, I would like to own my own oil change business."

Ben is looking into a career as an auto mechanic.

For the last 6 years, he's served in the Army National Guard.

Says Ben, " I do have a lot to bring to the table and I want to find a company that will take me and let me show off my leadership skills."

Tony Hernandez works for Valvoline Oil. Says Hernandez, " I believe in hiring veterans because I'm a veteran myself."

Hernandez was one of fifty employers at the job fair, with over 900 jobs.

Hernandez, "With veterans, they are more disciplined and they know how to follow directions and they take orders very well."

More than 100 100 veterans took part in the veterans job fair at Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac.

The unemployment rate among veterans is more than 13 percent in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is on a mission to help match vets with employers.

This year alone at veterans job fairs, more than 2,400 veterans have attended, with more than 650 employers taking part.

Twenty-eight percent of veterans attending such job fairs are able to get jobs.

Gary Meyer, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

"It's like one out of four. I think a lot of it is now they are prepared. We try to work hard in getting their interview skills and resumes ready."

And as more veterans return home, more are looking for jobs.

Companies that hire veterans can receive tax credits which can help with creating more jobs.
