Green Bay cites homeless shelter for too many occupants

Green Bay, Wis.(WFRV)--A Green Bay homeless shelter has been cited by the city for allowing too many people to stay.
This comes after several warnings, including a letter to St. John the Evangelist , demanding they admit no more than 64 people per night, based on their conditional use permit.
Green Bay city leaders also called a special meeting earlier this month to address the isue.
The shelter could face fines up to 500-dollars for each violation.
Leaders at St. John's have said they won't turn people away even if it means fines.
They released this statement today-- it says - "the St. John the Evangelist homeless shelter is working with the city of Green Bay in a good faith effort to address the issue of homelessness. We are not going to comment any further on this issue."
Meanwhile, Green Bay mayor Jim Schmitt emphasizes the city is strongly behind efforts to help local homeless.
He released a statement today saying, "The city must be consistent in its enforcement of conditional use permits upon knowledge of a violation... the city will continue to work with the shelter to find a solution. Both parties have agreed to work together on this issue."
A proposal to increase the number of beds to 84 will not be heard until the planning commission until January.
