APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) Since opening in 2010, this marks the coldest temperatures ever seen by the Fox Valley Warming Shelter.

The number of homeless men and women they serve hasn't hit record numbers but they are seeing more first-time clients.  28 slept at the shelter overnight.  That's down from the record high of 55 last year but on par with numbers from 2011.

Shelter directors are giving out hand-warmers and free bus passes.  They're also making extra trips with their shuttle, picking up people from downtown.  "As Appleton grows," says shelter Executive Director Brad Vivoda, "it seems the haves and have-nots seem to be increasing."

The Warming Shelter runs completely on donations with help from more than 60 volunteers each week.
