Green Bay, Wis (WFRV) - A Fond Du Lac man is lucky to be alive after spending 30 to 45 minutes in the freezing waters of Lake Winnebago.

The state D.N.R. says no ice is ever completely safe and there are open spots on lake Winnebago.

The Fond Du Lac County Sheriff's Department says just after 11:00 p.m. Friday night, a citizen called 911 to report hearing someone yelling for help on the lake. When emergency crews arrived in the area of Frazier Drive and Doty Street, they found 47 year-old Kelly Milam about 250 feet off shore in open water unable to get out.

His snowmobile had gone into open water.

Milam was suffering from severe hypothermia and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
