Heavy snow welcomed by area snowmobilers

GREEN BAY (WFRV) Sunny skies and between six-and-eight inches of new snow drew snowmobilers to the entrance of the Brown County Reforestation Camp trails. For some, it was their first outing of the season.

"I had the day off. So, this is my first chance to get out and do some snowmobiling and what the trails are like today," said John Baep of Howard.

Thursday's winter storm made it possible for nearly all trails in most of Northeast Wisconsin to open. People wasted little time taking their sleds to the trails this morning. Some snowmobilers say that because they've learned not to take chance with nature.

"The snow comes and then we get like a spring. A couple of days of rain and warm weather and it's gone. So even thought the weather man says we've had record breaking snowfall again, it just doesn't feel like it," said Carla Luedeman of Green Bay.

"Yeah, this is nice. At least we got snow. Hopefully it will stick around awhile and we'll get some riding in," said Roy Powless of Green Bay.

Until now, snowmobilers have had to drive further north to take to the trails. Some say they usually see ideal trail conditions close to home in late January.

While such trail conditions have come a bit later, the wait was worth it.

"They weren't groomed but the snow is nice and fluffy. It was a nice enjoyable ride. They weren't rough because of the powdery snow. It was a nice ride," said Baeps.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
