Low turnout despite statewide race

Green Bay, Wis.(WFRV)-- Not many voters braved the snow and cold to vote in today's primary election in Wisconsin. Local Five's Jenn Sullivan has more on today's vote.

UW-Green Bay Political Science professor David Helpap tells Local Five why today's only statewide race is important.


"This court gets to make the final decision for all sorts of things over the next few years."


Tuesdays non-partisan primary for the high court will decide which two candidates will be on the April 2nd ballot. Justice Pat Roggensack is hoping to serve a 2nd term on the states Supreme Court. She's being challenged by Marquette university Law Professor Ed Fallone and Vince Megna.

Professor Helpap,  "These are the individuals who are going to be on the State Supreme Court for the next 10 years and these are the individuals who are going to make the final decision when it comes to things like collective bargaining, voter I.D., and a variety of other issues."


Although justices are non-partisan they do lean politically left or right on key social issues. Currently the Wis. Supreme Court is favored conservatively 4-3. Justice Roggensack is considered more conservative than her two challengers. Talking to voters they say its her conservative history that makes her the best choice.


Jason Wisneski, "She was the only justice that did not participate in the pushing for the recall."
Christine Pfiester, "Because she's pro-life and that's a huge issue that's close to my heart."
Monica Podgurski, "Hopefully she will overturn some of the liberal policies."


But for others,  they're disappointed with the current high court and want to see changes. 
Dan Alesch, "I voted for Ed Fallone-- I don't like the way the other justices have made decisions in the past."
