MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) - The lakeshore got the brunt of the latest winter storm to northeast Wisconsin.

Manitowoc is getting another blast of winter weather. Between eight and 12 inches of snow fell across the county since Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Robert Hermann said high winds and blowing snow kept deputies busy throughout the Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

"We've had 60 cars in the ditch," Sheriff Hermann said. "Eight property damage accidents and a lot of other vehicles that actually got stuck right in the lane of traffic because the road conditions were so poor."

Plow drivers are also working overtime.

"About 35 pieces of equipment, 35 employees," explained Manitowoc County Highway Commissioner Gary Kennedy. "We used everybody we had."

The drifting snow had some trucks playing catch-up.

"It was so windy and the snow came so heavy," Kennedy added. "Especially after midnight it really started snowing hard and the winds were sustainable 25 miles per hour. So we'd go make our rounds and an hour later, it would be drifted shut again."

Most area schools were cancelled, but some kids were still put to work.

"My mom sent me a text saying 'go outside and shovel snow until we get home'," Kody Steeves said. "So that's pretty much what we've been doing since about 11:00 a.m."
