STURGEON BAY (WFRV) Drivers who regularly use the Bayview Bridge to take Highway 42 and 57 through Door County got one more chance to use the span. From now through July 4th, the span will undergo nearly five-million dollars in repairs and upgrades. Drives will be rerouted through downtown Sturgeon Bay. The route will be well marked and fairly familiar to many drivers.

Jack Moneypenny:"It takes them over the old Michigan Street Bridge, through downtown and up Michigan to reconnect with the highway," said Jack Moneypenny, President/CEO of the Door County Visitor Bureau.

Detour maps have been included on the Visitor Bureau website and in 35-thousand recently mailed visitor guides.

When barricades are placed at both ends of the bridge, downtown Sturgeon Bay will see an uptick in traffic. And that'll be a welcome change of pace. The detour follows the old route for Highway 42 and 57. For some along the route, it would like going back to the future.

"This might put us back on the map as far as being part of Door County again, too.

And we do get a lot of the travelers that do come through here, we become their favorite haunts on the weekends," said Kay Seitz, owner of Country Cabin.

For those in the historic Third Avenue District, the detour will build upon its attractions that are being rediscovered by visitors.

"You know there's so much to do, to shop, dine and explore here. They're just in amazement,"

said Diane Rockell, owner of Door County Traders.

For visitors, Moneypenny believes the detour and reconstruction will be worth the wait.

"But we're going to have a great bridge for both residents and visitors for years and years to come," he said.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
