NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) The republican President of the State Senate is casting doubt over passage of Governor Walker's school voucher program.
Democrats have long been in opposition to the proposal, but Republican Senator Mike Ellis says there isn't even enough support from the GOP on the matter.
The Governor officially introduced the school voucher proposal during his budget address last month.
It would give taxpayer dollars to families in districts with failing schools, and allow them to attend private institutions.
Senate President Mike Ellis of Neenah wouldn't give specific numbers, but says the majority of Republicans either don't like the plan or want school vouchers removed from the budget to be considered as a separate issue.
"Let's not bury the budget and then force the legislation to vote for the budget because of the old adage, 'we have to have a budget,'" Ellis said. "Well, we don't have to have a bad budget and this baby stinks."
