Cracking Down on Food Share Abuse

By: Wendy Fleury
Updated: March 14, 2013

NEENAH, Wisc. (WFRV) A proposed pilot program is aimed at cutting down on food stamp fraud.

Representative Dean Kaufert from Neenah introduced the legislation in Madison on Wednesday. He says the new initiative would limit the use of Food Share benefits to staple foods and beverages that have nutritional value.

Under current law, eligible food items include any food or food products for home consumption. That includes items such as soda, candy and ice cream.

"The FoodShare program is a beneficial program that assists people in need, but I'm sure many of you have also received reports and seen firsthand as I have that there are abuses taking place as well," Kaufert said. "This legislation will make sure that we continue to help those truly in need in our communities, while at the same time reduce abuse and misuse of this program."
