De Pere, Wis.(WFRV)--Several St. Norbert College students who are studying abroad in Rome were on hand at St. Peters Basilica to see Pope Francis meet the crowd for the first time.

Amanda Beggi is among twelve students studying abroad in Italy.

The group waited several hours in the rain to watch Pope Francis walk out onto the balcony.
The St. Norbert  college junior says this is her first time overseas.

She's been in Rome since January and was at the Vatican when Pope Benedict announced his resignation.

She tells Local 5 that she's still in awe from the whole experience.

Says Beggi, "Word got out and all the bells in Rome starting ringing.  You could hear all of this noise and all of this excitement and everyone pushing to get through with their umbrella.  We just looked at each other and couldn't believe what we were witnessing right then."

The group of students will be studying abroad until the end of the semester.

You can see photos from the students on the St. Norbert College Study Abroad Facebook page.
