Garza, Cubs avoid sweep, beat Brewers 8-0

Matt Garza was one out away from a complete-game shutout, and Zack Greinke was roughed up as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-0 at Wrigley Field Thursday afternoon.

With a win, the Brewers would have completed their first-ever four game sweep of the Cubs.

Garza went 8 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine.  He would have completed the game if not for a throwing error with 2 outs in the 9th which allowed Norichika Aoki to reach first base.  Cubs manager Dale Sveum then took Garza, who had thrown 119 pitches, out of the game.

Greinke lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing 8 earned runs on 9 hits.  The Cubs scored six runs off the Brewers right-hander in the third inning, at one point getting five consecutive hits.

The Brewers now head to Atlanta for a three game series with the Braves.  Game one is Friday night at 6:35 P. M.
