HARRIS, MI (WFRV) -- More than 140 professional women golfers are trying their hand at Sweetgrass Golf Club in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass is part of the Symetra Tour, Road to the LPGA.

At the end of the season 10 of the golfers will earn their way onto the LPGA. That is twice the number of spots as last year.

They are also playing for some great prize money along the way including an event purse of $110,000 in Harris, Michigan.

The average age on the tour is 25, though golfers must be at least 17 to qualify.

To make the event a success around 300 local volunteers are staffing the holes, concession stands and registration desks.

The tournament is great exposure for local businesses, many who are sponsors.

It is also good for business. According to the Delta County Chamber of Commerece if fans like what they see, they are more likely to return to the area year round.

This tournament is a chance for fans of the game to get up close with the stars of tomorrow.

The ladies are happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures after their round.

Tickets are affordable, just $10 for all three days. Teens and kids under 15 get in for free.

Spectators are allowed to bring in chairs, but there is also grandstand seating available.

Local 5 is once again a proud sponsor of the tournament. For more information click here. (http://symetrascoring.com/)
