Burke's Blog - 8/5 Training Camp Update

By: Burke Griffin
Updated: August 5, 2012
After having the day off on Saturday following the Family Night scrimmage, the Packers returned to the practice field on Sunday night, but several veterans, including Aaron Rodgers, were given the night off.

Head coach Mike McCarthy referred to it as a "veteran select" day, where certain veteran players were given the evening off.  That list included Aaron Rodgers, Jeff Saturday, Charles Woodson, Donald Driver, Jarrett Bush, A. J. Hawk, and Ryan Pickett.  Fullback John Kuhn would have been part of that group, but elected to practice.

Left tackle Marshall Newhouse and wide receiver Greg Jennings also missed practice Sunday.  McCarthy said both suffered concussions in the Family night scrimmage.  Herb Taylor and rookie Andrew Datko ran with the #1 unit at left tackle.

A player who returned "full-go" to practice was linebacker Desmond Bishop, who told media earlier on Sunday that he was looking forward to hitting something.  He made his presence known late in practice with big hits on back-to-back plays during a red zone drill.

Rodgers' absence gave all of the quarterback reps to Graham Harrell and B. J. Coleman.  Harrell is in his first season as the #2 quarterback, while Coleman is in his rookie NFL campaign.

The Packers return to Ray Nitschke Field on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.  We'll have full coverage for you on Local 5 news and here on wearegreenbay.com
