MENOMONEE FALLS, Wisconsin (January 21, 2013) - High school senior athletes can win up to $5,000 in scholarships through the Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship Contest (WSASC), sponsored by Wisconsin-based Cousins Subs.

The scholarship contest honors high school senior athletes throughout the state who participate in a WIAA sanctioned sport with a chance to be awarded with up to a $5,000 scholarship for continuing their education.  First place prizes of $5,000 will be awarded to one male and one female athlete.  Runner-up prizes of $1,000 will also be awarded to one male and one female athlete.

The scholarships will be funded through Cousins Subs' newly developed, Make It Better Foundation. The Make It Better Foundation was established to improve the general welfare and quality of life in the communities Cousins Subs serves. The foundation will provide grants to organizations that provide support in three areas that Cousins believes are vital to any community: Health/Wellness, Hunger and Youth Education.

"Through the establishment of The Make It Better Foundation and sponsorship of the WSASC, Cousins Subs is honored to be giving back to the community that we serve," said Justin McCoy, vice president of marketing at Cousins Subs.  "The WSASC encompasses two of the foundation's core missions: health & wellness and youth education."

The Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarships are available to any high school senior who will graduate in 2013 and has participated in a WIAA sport.

From the qualified applicants, four finalists will be selected by the Board of Directors of The Make It Better Foundation.  Winners will be announced at the Wisconsin Sports Awards Banquet on April 18th at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

"The Wisconsin Sports Awards banquet is a night of recognition of Wisconsin's 'best of the best' in professional and collegiate sports, honoring athletes and coaches alike," McCoy said.  "Coaches, management and players from baseball, basketball, football and more will be in attendance.  It will be quite a night!"

Cousins Subs was established in 1972, when Bill Specht and his cousin opened their first shop in Milwaukee to curb a hankering for their favorite East Coast subs. Their handcrafted, deli-style subs eventually stirred a hungry fan base who especially loved Cousins' secret recipe for freshly baked bread with the perfect amount of crunch in the crust.  This bread eventually became the cornerstone for their Better Bread.  Better Subs positioning. Celebrating its 40th anniversary as a family-owned business in 2012, Cousins Subs and its franchisees now operate approximately 150 stores in six states and are embarking on an expansion plan.  For more information, visit www.cousinssubs.com.  You can also find Cousins Subs on Facebook and Twitter.
