GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the second-straight season, the Green Bay women's basketball team will return to a site it has played in recent years and open the NCAA Tournament as a road team. No. 20/20 Green Bay (29-2), the Horizon League regular season and tournament champion, received the No. 11 seed in the Spokane Region and will play at No. 6 seed LSU (20-11) in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Green Bay, winners of 24-straight games, will be making its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its eighth appearance in 10 seasons overall under head coach Kevin Borseth. The program will be making its 14th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Phoenix also opened the 2009 NCAA Tournament at LSU, falling to the Tigers, 69-59 on March 22, 2009. In that contest, Green Bay was also seeded No. 11 and LSU was seeded sixth. The two teams also played in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, with the Lady Tigers winning 80-69.
Sunday's contest will be played at the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge and the winner will advance to Tuesday's second round to face the winner of the No. 3 Penn State-No. 14 Cal Poly opening round game. LSU went 10-6 in the Southeastern Conference and has won seven of its last eight games.
In 2012, Green Bay returned to Ames, Iowa for the second time in three seasons and defeated #10 seed and host Iowa State, 71-57 in the first round before falling to No. 12/11 Kentucky 65-62.
Green Bay boasts four double-digit scorers, including All-Horizon League senior and tournament MVP Adrian Ritchie. Ritchie and the Phoenix senior class has won at least one NCAA Tournament game in each of the past three seasons and sport a 4-3 overall record in the Big Dance.
The Lady Tigers are led by 6-foot-5 junior Theresa Plaisance, who leads four players in double figures at 17.4 points per game. Plaisance was a First-Team All-SEC selection and teammate Adrienne Webb was a Second-Team All-SEC honoree.
