Packers open preseason tonight against in San Diego

By: Nick Goddard
Updated: August 9, 2012
The long wait is over as the Packers will return to game action with their preseason opener tonight in San Diego.

After playing "Packers vs. Packers" for the past two weeks, the team is ready to face someone else.  Several players will miss the game due to injury (Greg Jennings, Marshall Newhouse, among others) or just for rest (Charles Woodson.)

It will be the first chances for rookies, both drafted and undrafted, to make their mark on the field.  1st round pick Nick Perry will be with the starting unit at outside linebacker.  Casey Hayward and Jerel Worthy, also high draft picks, figure to get plenty of action on the defensive side of the ball.

Aaron Rodgers and the starters on offensive unit won't play much tonight, so backup quarterbacks Graham Harrell and B. J. Coleman will see the majority of snaps.  This is Harrell's first preseason game as the #2 quarterback, while Coleman is a rookie.

History will also be made as the NFL's first female referee will hit the field tonight.  Shannon Eastin has officiated games in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the past 16 years, and as a replacement official, will be part of the crew working the Packers-Chargers contest.
