Report: Packers Expected to Sign RB Cedric Benson

By: Ryan Rodig
Updated: August 10, 2012

ESPN's Chris Mortenson reported Friday that veteran RB Cedric Benson was in Green Bay and expected to sign with the Packers.  NFL.com later confirmed the report that Green Bay intends to sign Benson, who played the last four seasons in Cincinnati.

Benson, 29, has rushed for at least 1,000 yards the last three seasons with the Bengals and has tallied 19 touchdowns in that span.

Last season, Benson rushed 273 times for 1,067 yards and six touchdowns.  Benson turns 30 in Decemeber.

Packers starting RB James Starks was unimpressive in his preseason debut, rushing five times for 16 yards with a fumble and a dropped pass.

Second-year RB Alex Green is returning from ACL reconstruction surgery.  He rushed for 3 yards on 3 carries, while Marc Tyler totaled 32 yards on 13 carries.  Brandon Saine missed the game with a hamstring injury.

The Packers did not practice Friday, and return to work for a 7 P.M practice Saturday.  The team has not confirmed the signing of Benson.
