Packers Release Charles Woodson

Green Bay, Wis. (WFRV) -- The Green Bay Packers have confirmed theyGreen Bay Packers will be cutting veteran defensive back Charles Woodson. 

The announcement was made Friday by Packers Executive Vice president and General manager Ted Thompson. 'We are grateful for all that Charles has given to the Green Bay PAckers over the past seven years," Thompson said. "He has been an integral part of the Packers' success and out Super Bowl title in 2010 would not have been possible without his contributions. A once-in-a-generation talent as a player, he is also a great leader and ambassador for the organization off the field. Charles will always be amember of the Packers family and we look forward to his eventual induction into the Pro Footbal Hall of Fame. We wish him andhis family all the best."

Woodson would be due $9 million in 2013, counting as $10 million against the salary cap this season.

Woodson signed with the Packers in 2006 as a free agent, and has been an impact player ever since.  He played a key role in leading Green Bay to a Super Bowl winning season back in 2010.

According to NFL.com, Woodson's agent says he has no plans to retire and that he would like to play for a contender this season and win another Super Bowl.

The Packers haven't officially released any information yet.  Count on Local 5 for continued coverage throughout the day.
