Heat dangers at U.S. Women's Open Championship in Kohler

KOHLER, Wis. (WFRV) - Hot and sticky weather is in the forecast this week.

It's impacting fans, players and volunteers the U.S. Women's Open Championship in Kohler.

Tuesday's practice round was delayed 1:45 because of thunderstorms.

However, when the rain and wind stopped the heat moved in.

"At any golf tournament when the heat gets up there, people start going down" says Tim Flaherty, Senior Director of the  U.S. Women's Open.

The medical team was called into action Tuesday when a fan on hole 18 got too hot.

"We really rely heavily on volunteers we have over 2500 volunteers" explains Flaherty.

Besides keeping fans cool event organizers need to keep those volunteers healthy.

"We gave them an extra volunteer water voucher this morning. We allocate all of their food and beverage coupons so we added one last night" says Barry Deach, The Championship Director.

New tents were added to Black Wolf Run giving fans prime viewing and relief from the heat.

Event organizers say the best bet for fans is to find an active hole and stay put.

"We have a big viewing hill on 18, behind 9 and 18 you can watch both of those holes. We've also got a grandstand which is in the shade at 18 and will be in the shade most of the day" says Flaherty

According to Deach " The course unlike Whistling Straits, is a wooded golf course. So there's a lot more shade. You see people taking advantage of the trees and staying hydrated".

Advice the players will also need to be on their best game.

"They deal with a lot of different conditions in a lot of places around the world. They probably didn't expect this heat in Wisconsin, but they know what to do" says Flaherty.

One last tip to beat the heat, check out the merchandise shop which is air conditioned.

"Good hats, good sunscreen you'll be well taken care of" says Deach.

Tickets are still available for the event which runs through Sunday.

Kids under 17 are free with an adult.
