Terrific Teacher: Denmark High School Greenhouse

DENMARK, Wis. (WFRV) - Denmark High School students have a new tool for learning about agriculture.

They are getting ready to sell the first crop from a new greenhouse.

"We planted almost 5,000 plants in here" says Tracy Heinbuch, Agriculture Education Teacher at Denmark High School. "Between our four inch pots, vegetables, hanging pots and containers, they have definitely been busy".

The state of the art facility is thanks in part to a $50,000 grant from the Denmark FFA alumni.

While digging in the dirt students also get a science lesson.

"Photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration all the plant processes, as well has how to care and grow them" says Heinbuch.

Greenhouses are one of the fastest growing agricultural industries in the state of Wisconsin and that means these students will be better prepared to enter the working world.

"It is very important to continue these traditions because without agriculture we really would not be able to survive" she says.

It is a career path for some, but life lessons for all.

Heinbuch explains students learn "how to plant a garden, how to do some landscaping. All things they'll use once they graduate from high school".

The students will sell the plants and vegetables May 5th and 12th at Denmark High School.
