Green Bay's Brown named Horizon League Player of the Week

By: Nick Goddard
Updated: January 28, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Following a grand week in which he averaged 20.5 points per game and became the 25th member of the program's 1,000-point club, junior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. It marks the first weekly honor for the All-Horizon League big man.

On Friday, the 7-foot-1 Brown scored 15 of his career-high 23 points in the second half to lead Green Bay to a 74-54 rout at Milwaukee. With five minutes left in the game, Brown flushed a fastbreak dunk to reach 1,000 points for his career.

En route to 9-of-18 shooting, Brown scored on two dunks, a three-pointer and a collection of jumpers and post moves. He added 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in helping the Phoenix to the nationally-televised win.

Earlier in the week, Brown had 18 points and six rebounds in a 73-61 loss at Valparaiso, scoring 14 points in the opening half before seeing his minutes limited due to foul trouble.

In 83 career games, Brown has compiled 1,004 points, 565 rebounds and 192 blocked shots. The all-time leader in blocked shots in Phoenix history, Brown ranks seventh in all-time in the Horizon League and needs just eight more to become the fourth player in Horizon League history with 200 blocks. With 12 more, Brown will rank third in Horizon League history.

Averaging 12.6 points (12th), 6.7 rebounds (3rd) and 1.7 blocks (2nd), Brown ranks among Horizon League leaders in five different categories. In league play, he is averaging 14.1 points and three blocks per game.

Brown has led the Phoenix to five wins in its last six games by averaging 15.3 points. Green Bay heads to the second half of Horizon League play in a tie for second place.

The Phoenix will next be in action on Thursday night, playing at UIC at 7 p.m. Green Bay will then visit Loyola on Saturday at 1 p.m.
