Shawano County (WFRV) Hundreds of students from Shawano Community High School will be enjoying their prom this Saturday. And school officials are making sure they have fun without alcohol.
All 300 plus students going will have to take a breathalyzer test before going into prom.
The test takes about 30 seconds. If you haven't been drinking --it displays negative-- if you have been drinking-- positive. If the breath test is positive another test will be given that shows your blood alcohol content.
"We really wanted an opportunity to provide our students to have another reason not to use alcohol on prom night." Said Principal Scott Zwirschitz.
Any student who has been drinking could face an underage drinking ticket and school discipline including suspension.
The new procedure is getting mixed reviews from students.
"It doesn't bother me at all. I'm not drinking before I go to Prom." Said TJ Hein.
"I personally think its kind of ridiculous. Because everybody had to be breathalyzed (sic) not just anyone they suspect to be drinking. Like they don't trust us at all." Said Kayla Buettner.
But James Kolb says "If they've had problems in the past and they think it's the best way to deal with it, it's how it should be dealt with then."
The school will reevaluate the procedure and decide if they are going to do it again next year.
