Game day traffic prompts plea from police

By: Heather Sawaski
Updated: August 17, 2012

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) - The construction on Oneida Street has been causing traffic backups for most of the summer. Now with the added congestion of a home Packers game, police are urging drivers to find a different way to the field.

"It was midnight last night before we cleared the game related traffic off of Oneida Street, it was that tough," Capt. Randy Schultz said.

According to Capt. Schultz,  some people headed to Lambeau Field didn't make it in time for kick-off. Due to construction, the street is down to one lane.

"So i guess our plea is to realize that this is going to be tough," he said. "So if you can steer over to Ashland or Holmgren before the game, and realize that if you insist on being on Oneida Street, exiting after the game is going to take time. Be patient."

And those back-ups have a ripple effect.

"We brought the officers back in off their traffic assignments to their security assignments late," said Capt. Schultz.

He said, next game, they may look at forcing traffic onto other streets. Not only as a way to save time, but also for safety. But, thankfully, before the next home game later this month, Oneida Street will be back up to two lanes on each side. The project should be completed in September.
