GREEN BAY Wis. (WFRV) -- Green Bay Police Chief Jim Arts didn't request more officers in his 2011 budget, he was just hoping to keep his current staff. But, Tuesday night the City Council and Mayor Jim Schmitt borrowed money from other departments surplus funds to add five more officers to the force. "We'll take more help. You give them to me and we'll fill them and you'll get a return on your investment," said Police Chief Jim Arts. Crime in Green Bay is currently at a 10 year low, and with five new officers Arts believes officers will have more time to help the community. The addition of the five new positions brings the total number of sworn officers up to 192, the highest number of officers for Green Bay since 2003. Three of the new officers will start in May, and the other two will start in July. "When you hire somebody in July, three and a half months of training, you're already to the end of the year before they're on their own," Arts said. "It's a slower transition than maybe they might realize with a stroke of a gavel, giving me five new cops, it doesn't mean they start now," said Arts. Chief Arts is already looking for ways to bring more revenue into the department, but he says writing more tickets is not the solution. Millaine Wells has the story.
