Sleep in the ICU

By:
Updated: November 29, -0001
If you've ever been in the ICU at a hospital, you can related to the difficulty trying to sleep while listening to the various monitors. Sylvia Landeros is in the ICU waiting for a liver transplant. She says sleeping is not always easy. "I don't know if it's the anxiety of being in a hospital, but, uh, no not a deep sleep." Doctor Randall Friese is heading a study to prove that patients like Sylvia are not getting quality sleep. "They sleep in a very superficial state. Whereas about half the time during a normal period of sleep, we should be in the deep stages of sleep." The disease itself contributes to lack of sleep. But since that cannot be changed, Dr. Friese says hospital caregivers need to control the patient's environment. "So lighting, noise reduction, and very importantly, getting our ICU staff to recognize the importance of giving the patient some undisturbed time for rest."
