breaking news
As per usual on a typical training camp Wednesday, no practice for the Packers today. That R and R coming on the heels of two practices yesterday, both without pads.
A two-a-day without any rough stuff in either session, what is the football world coming to? That was unheard of back in the day and anybody with any old-school blood in his veins would say "What kind of country club they running over there."
To be honest, I was a little bit surprised when both workouts were sans pads but I can tell you (and myself) this - Mike McCarthy knows the pulse of his team. He knows what it needs. It's one of his real talents as a head coach.
I realized how gifted he was in that regard midway through last season. You'll recall the Packers went down and lost 38-28 to a bad Tampa Bay team. The defeat left them 4-4 and with a season that could swing either way. Seasons can be rather fragile, and it doesn't take a lot to tip them one way or another.
Well, you'll also recall the Packers beat Dallas 17-7 the very next week and went on to win 5 in a row and 7 of their last 8. If the head coach doesn't say the right things, if he doesn't take exactly the right approach at that critical juncture in the season, it doesn't turn out that way. I thought it was truly an excellent piece of coaching. Mike McCarthy had a team on the fence, and he made sure it fell on the right side of it.
Bottom line, if a coach is smart enough to save a season, he's smart enough to know when to go in pads, and when not to.
