Larry McCarren's Training Camp Report / August 25, 2010

By:
Updated: November 29, -0001
The Packers went through their normal last practice before a game this morning. The hour-long session was held inside the Hutson Center with no pads and no helmets. It's really just a mental review of the game plan. As far as the preseason goes, the Colts game has the potential to be more interesting than most. It's the third one, and most teams, including the Packers, use it as the dress rehearsal for the regular season. Starters will play at least a half. That being the case, those starters will be playing against Peyton Manning and the reigning AFC champs. Not a bad measuring stick. Green Bay's offense will look like the unit that will line up against Philly in the regular season opener, but the same can't be said for the defense. New to the party this week, Rookie Frank Zombo, who will likely open at ROLB in place of Brad Jones (shoulder), and 2nd Rounder Mike Neal, who's a good bet to replace Cullen Jenkins (calf). More of the team's preferred defensive starters should be on the field than there were last game, but it's still hard to get a handle on where that side of the ball is at. Just too many folks have been out with injuries. In the worth watching file, there's Morgan Burnett. The rookie safety is being counted on to play and play right away, and he seemed to show up more this week. Intercepted a pass, knocked another way. He needs to bring that practice performance to the game. Elsewhere in the secondary, the pecking order after Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams is still unsettled. Brandon Underwood, Pat Lee and now Sam Shields are in the running for Nickel and Dime jobs. There's also first rounder Bryan Bulaga. He's making progress at guard but Daryn Colledge has been solid to solid plus. If that trend continues, Bulaga's not going to begin the season as a starter. As previously mentioned, Bulaga's cause isn't being helped by all the reps he takes at left tackle. Elsewhere in the O-line, Allen Barbre and Breno Giacomini have their work cut out for them. When it comes to pass protection, they haven't been trustworthy, and when you have an Aaron Rodgers at QB, those tackles have to be trusted. As for special teams, that's where a guy like Tom Crabtree (TE/'09 practice squad) has got to shine. Shields will have ample opportunities to prove himself in the kicking game as well (covering not returning). There's also the competition at punter, and going into the Indy game, the race between Tim Masthay and Chris Bryan is still too close to call. Plenty to check out, and against a good opponent. We'll review the game on Friday. Thanks for reading.
