It's tea time in the garden - but not the kind you drink. In today's Green Scene, Erin Davisson talks to Fox Valley Technical College horticulture instructor James Beard about making compost tea.
If you do a Google search, you'll find more than 300-thousand references to compost tea. Some even call it an elixir that will invigorate your garden. Beard explains how to make it, and why you should.
Compost Tea Recipes
Bacterial Tea
5 gallon pail of water
2 pounds of compost- such as worm castings
3-4 Tablespoons of blackstrap molasses
2 Tablespoons of soluble kelp or fish emulsion
Great for applying to flowers and vegetables.
For Fungal Tea
2 pounds of fungal compost (compost of mostly tree leaves and stalky materials)
2 tbsp of humic acid
2 tbsp of yucca extract
1 ounce of fish emulsion with delp.
2 TB ground oatmeal
Great for applying to woody plants such as trees and shrubs.
It is also important to not use city water- which is chlorinated- in your tea. If you must use- let it vent in the bucket overnight before making tea. Also, use hydrogen peroxide to clean the bucket between batches of compost tea.
