Millions of people make telephone calls from their computers. And most of them are using programs like SKYPE.
But now Google is making it easier to make calls from your laptop or desktop -- in what could be a big development in the world of online communications.
Google is making it easier reach out and call someone on your computer.
Now, you make a phone call through your g-mail account for free - or a few cents for international calls..
Says CNet Editor Wilson Tang, “ It’s not groundbreaking, but it is more convenient. Before, you had to set up a “skype date” or “chat date” from one computer to another. Nnow it's a lot easier and free to call a phone from your computer. “
That means the person you're calling doesn't need a computer - just a phone. You don't even have to install any extra software.
Here's how it works:
Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click "Call phone" at the top of the GMAIL chat list and dial a number or enter a contact's name.
Google is taking direct aim at traditional phone companies and at SKYPE, the European company that is currently the worldwide leader in so-called Voice Over IP services.
Technology experts say it's the latest step toward a single phone number that can be used on multiple devices.. including your computer... land line and cell phone..
