Green Bay Mayor presents budget proposal

GREEN BAY (WFRV) All Green Bay city employees could soon be contributing to their health care and retirement plans.

Mayor Jim Schmitt presented his 2012 budget proposal to the City Council Tuesday night.

One of the items in the proposal is a measure to force members of the police and fire departments to contribute to their health care and retirement funds. Those two groups of union workers were exempt from the state's Collective Bargaining Law approved earlier this year. That law forced most public employees in Wisconsin to pay more towards health care and retirement.

Schmitt says the city is facing a $3.5 million shortfall in 2012. The contributions from police and fire are only a portion of  how the mayor plans to balance the budget.

Schmitt is also calling for a six month hiring freeze. He says not filling positions will save the city nearly $2 million.

The mayor is also proposing a $25 dollar a year fee to homeowners for leaf collection.
