TOWN OF SCOTT, Wis. (WFRV) - A teacher at Holy Cross Catholic School is using technology to get kids out of the classroom.

The school is part of the Green Bay Area Catholic Education System.

Local 5's Millaine Wells caught up with this Terrific Teacher as he gave his students a demonstration of brand new GPS units used to study science.

"It is like a cell phone" says Holy Cross Middle School teacher Jason Johnson. "The buttons work the same, the alphabet is the same".

Johnson says kids learn quickly when it comes to technology.

"You see them outside they're having lots of fun. They are giggling and laughing and I think that is when they learn the best, when they are engaged and doing things that are fun for them".

A WPS grant allowed Johnson to purchase six GPS units for his class.

"They are going to identify different species of plants. They will use the GPS to mark those plants so we can go back in two months and say ok what changed about this tree, what changed about this location".

This is the 2nd time Johnson has earned an Innovative Educator Award from the utility company.

"If I am bored with what I'm doing the kids are bored. They are in tune with the different technologies that are out there and if they want to do something why shouldn't I include that in what I'm doing so that makes them want to learn".

Johnson is also teaching a unique summer program called "Camp Invention". You can find details by clicking here.
